CUE supports young students from the Yazidi minority in Iraq that has suffered from the genocide of the so-called Islamic State.

German Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung funds 8 Yazidi scholarships

The Catholic University in Erbil approached the Yazda Organisation in July 2019 , to help bring higher education to some of their young people . At the beginning of the first semester in September 2019, the university granted scholarships, including accommodation, for 11 Yazidi students. The university is now very happy to announce its partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) , Syria/Iraq office , in the sponsorship of 8 of these 11 Yazidi students for their degree programme, starting from this current semester.

“I am delighted that we have been able to help educate these young Yazidi students ; supporting minorities is our priority. I thank KAS for their great assistance, in not only helping these 8 students, but the Catholic University in Erbil at the same time”.

Chaldean Archbishop Bashar Warda of Erbil

“Since the beginning of the year, the German Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung funds 8 Yazidi scholarships. These highly motivated young people are studying at the CUE which we would like to thank for our great and sustainable partnership. It is particularly important to us to support young students from the Yazidi minority in Iraq that has suffered from the genocide of the so-called Islamic State and to give hope to a new generation through education knowing that access to education is the key to better future perspectives”.

Gregor Jaecke, Head of KAS Syria/Iraq Office

“The Catholic University in Erbil’s initiative to accept 11 Yazidi students is a magnificent step for the Yazidi community and for students and their families. Most of the accepted students are Yazidi IDPs from Sinjar, a region that was badly hit by ISIS in 2014. This partnership between our two organizations is also a positive and collaborative step among Iraqi minorities — something extremely needed as minorities recover from genocide. We express our gratitude to CUE and to Chaldean Archbishop Bashar Warda who have been a strong voice for all minorities in Iraq and the region.”
Murad Ismael, Executive Director of Yazda
