Department of Oriental Studies

Oriental studies graduates find employment in many and diverse fields including business, finance law, civil service, journalism, government and industry.

Vision

To introduce students to cultures and civilizations that do not usually form part of the mainstream curriculum in many countries. The courses present both the major traditions of the regions studies and, in most cases, their modern developments. It sees the wealth of literature left and still developed as a source of convergence of all nations living in Middle East besides the world and not divergence from each other.

Mission

Oriental studies is the academic field of study that embraces Near Eastern and Far Eastern societies and cultures, languages, peoples, history and archaeology; in recent years the subject has often been turned into the newer terms of Asian studies and Meddle Eastern studies.

The department of oriental studies is firmly dedicated to CUE mission of being a leader in the production of original research. To explore Middle East societies, past and present, through intensive and highly specialized engagement with primary sources in Middle East European languages and media.

At the same time, the department maintains a theoretically informed awareness of the ways in which ideas about Middle East, Asia and Europe have been constructed and deployed in the modern world.

Objective

The objectives of the department are:

  • To equip students with knowledge, and education in the field of oriental studies.
  • To form the personality, general scientific and socio-cultural competencies of graduates to perform tasks in the field of local and international relations.
  • To implement the standard of higher professional Education in the field of Oriental Studies
  • To develop and implement educational programs in the following areas: international Relations, Foreign Area Studies, Islamic Studies, History and Culture of the East and Middle East, Oriental Languages.
  • To conduct research aimed at building a coherent picture of contemporary International Relations in some regions of the world, with particular attention to the countries of the Near, Middle (including Central Asia) and the Far East, Europe;
  • To study the history, traditions, culture and basic beliefs of the Eastern peoples to form a holistic understanding of Eastern perspective, international relations and effective dialogue with the countries of the Middle east in Particular;
  • To study the interaction of cultures and the interaction between civilizations for peaceful coexistence in a multicultural environment.

Job Description

Oriental studies graduates find employment in many and diverse fields including business, finance law, civil service, journalism, government and industry.

Many graduates are expected to undertake future research into subjects linked with oriental studies and to pursue successful careers in the academic world, education and in museums.
