Department of Oriental Studies

Vision

The vision of the university, especially for this program, is to prompt peaceful coexistent for the different communities in the country through excellent education in order to build a vibrant community.

The program presents students with cultures, traditions and civilization originated in this area of Mesopotamia and their modern developments. It sees the wealth of literature in Iraq as a source of convergence of all nations and not a divergence from each other. To achieve that, along with the academic program, different workshops and seminars will be offered by lectures from different background and traditions to enhance educational progress.

Mission

The department of Oriental studies is firmly dedicated to CUE mission of being a leader in education and researching. The department aims to delve deeper into eastern Christian studies (Mesopotamia) through academic thinking and criticism allowing the students with their different traditions and backgrounds to research and enrich their traditions theologically. Theology is open to dialogue with the civilization of Mesopotamia with its various cultures and religions, especially with Islam, which has a history of 1,400 years of profound coexistence. Our mission is to develop active, creative and open minds that deepen the understanding of our country’s valuable traditions and heritage.  The department’s mission is graduating academics who can affect the quality of teaching in religious studies and the Syriac language. Also, the degree in Oriental Studies is greatly appreciated by a wide range of employers whether in the education or research field.

Objective

The objectives of the department are:

  • To equip students with science, knowledge, and education in the field of Oriental Studies
  • To form the personality, general scientific and socio- cultural competencies of graduates to perform tasks in the field of local and international relations,
  • To implement the standard of higher professional education in the field of Oriental Studies\to develop and implement educational programs in the following areas: oriental languages, different religious studies, history and culture of the East and middle East and international relations
  • to study the history, traditions, culture and basic beliefs of Eastern peoples to form a holistic understanding of the Eastern perspective, international relations and effective dialogue with countries of the middle east in particular
  • to study the interaction of cultures and the interaction between civilization for peaceful coexistence in a multicultural environment.

Job Description

Oriental Studies graduates find employment in the education system.

Graduates are expected to peruse further studies for higher degree and also pursue a search in subjects linked with oriental studies in the academic world.

The graduates can also work in museums.
