Fr. Dr. Karam Shamasha is a distinguished academic leader, moral theologian, and expert in Oriental and Religious Studies. With over a decade of experience in pastoral leadership, higher education, and community development, he currently serves as Provost at the Catholic University in Erbil (CUE).
His academic and professional journey bridges Iraq, Italy, and the United States, reflecting a deep commitment to theological education, intercultural dialogue, and the advancement of academic institutions in the region. As a multilingual scholar and dedicated priest, Fr. Karam is known for his passion for mentorship, interfaith engagement, and building resilient academic communities rooted in moral and humanitarian values.
Academic Background
Fr. Karam holds a Doctorate and Master’s degree in Moral Theology from the Pontifical Alphonsian Academy in Rome. He also holds several advanced diplomas in Canon Law, Interreligious Studies, and Priestly Formation from esteemed pontifical institutions including the Gregorian University, Lateran University, and Congregation for the Clergy. His academic foundation began in Iraq, with a Diploma in Philosophy and Theology from Babel College and a Baccalaureate in Theology from Urbaniana University.
Currently, he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Translation at the University of Mosul.
Teaching and Leadership Roles
A seasoned educator, Fr. Karam has taught Moral Theology and Religious Studies at multiple institutions across Iraq, Italy, and the United States. His teaching appointments include:

- Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome, Italy (2023–2024)
- Diocesan School of Theological-Pastoral Formation, Duhok (2023–Present)
- Christian Education Institute, Duhok & Erbil (2020–2024)
- Pontifical Babel College, Erbil (2018–2022)
Prior to his appointment as Provost, he served as Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration at CUE, where he led strategic and institutional planning efforts across the university.
Pastoral and Community Service
Fr. Karam continues to serve as Parish Priest of Telskuf Parish (2020–Present), and previously held pastoral roles in Telskuf and Alqosh. His pastoral mission is complemented by years of volunteer work with organizations such as Hope for Iraqi Christians and Aid to the Church in Need in Rome.
