Historical Background

The Department of Business Management at the Catholic University in Erbil (CUE) was established in November 2022 in response to the growing need in the Iraqi labor market for business leaders capable of working in culturally and religiously diverse environments. The Department aims to encourage graduates to move away from relying solely on public sector jobs, promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, and creating sustainable businesses that focus on the optimal use of natural resources, understanding available opportunities, and developing products with distinct branding. The Department began with 24 students from various ethnic and religious backgrounds in Iraq, and now serves 74 students.

At its inception, the Department had a faculty of two full-time members and four external lecturers, and it has since expanded to include five faculty members. The Department has published five research papers in high-impact international journals, with the number of publications steadily increasing. It boasts a range of educational facilities, including modern classrooms, computer labs, and a university library, and supports entrepreneurship initiatives through workshops and student competitions.

In December 2023, Dr. Abdulsatar Sultan, the Head of the Department and a member of both the Arab-German Young Academy (AGYA) and the Global Young Academy (GYA), organized the first international student visit program to Germany. This was a competitive global program supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). A group of 13 students visited Dortmund University and Dortmund Technical University for two weeks, which enhanced the students’ academic and cultural experiences and opened new opportunities for international collaboration. Next year, the Department will graduate its first batch of students, marking a significant milestone in its development.

Currently, the department is in the process of launching its Innovation Club, aimed at fostering creativity and collaboration among students. The Department also focuses on building academic and community relationships, organizing annual events such as “Business Week,” and encouraging students to establish student clubs and engage in community-serving projects.

Mission

The Department of Business Management at CUE prepares graduates to succeed in diverse, multicultural business environments by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience through internships. The program fosters professional competence, ethical leadership, cultural sensitivity, and social responsibility. It also promotes innovation, entrepreneurial thinking, and the application of research methodologies and analytical tools to solve real-world business challenges.

Vision

To be a leader in business management education, recognized nationally and regionally for excellence, innovation, and impact. The department expands research activities to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of business and society, strengthens international academic partnerships, and establishes a dedicated innovation lab to support entrepreneurship, creativity, and applied research.

Program Learning Objectives

  • Apply integrated business knowledge in management, accounting, marketing, finance, human resources, and economics, while leveraging digital technologies and information systems to solve complex business problems. Graduates will effectively respond to global and local business challenges by integrating international and culturally relevant practices.
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively in both written and oral forms across diverse professional and multicultural environments. Graduates will demonstrate leadership, ethical behavior, and the ability to function within teams in organizational and cross-cultural contexts. Employ analytical, critical thinking, and quantitative skills to interpret and evaluate data, support strategic and operational decision-making, enhance organizational performance, and conduct basic academic research using appropriate business methodologies.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, financial planning, and risk assessments to support the development and evaluation of new business ventures. Emphasis is placed on innovation management and venture creation, distinct from core functional business operations.
  • Embrace innovation and entrepreneurship by applying creativity, design thinking, and adaptability to drive business transformation. Graduates will develop the entrepreneurial mindset and skills necessary to launch and manage their own ventures and continuously respond to evolving business environments.

Student Learning Opportunities

The Department of Business Management at CUE offers students the chance to earn academic credit beyond traditional coursework through international collaborations and online learning. We partner with the University of Graz (Austria) via the Erasmus+International Credit Mobility Programme in Peace and Conflict Studies and Education, allowing students to study abroad and transfer credits. Additionally, through the InduTwin Project with Fachhochschule Dortmund (Germany) and its Language Team Tasks (LTT), students engage in virtual teamwork and international learning experiences for academic credit. These opportunities provide valuable global exposure and help students progress toward graduation.
