Building New Neural Connections through Art: Literature, Painting, and Music

The workshop titled “Building New Neural Connections through Art: Literature, Painting, and Music” was presented by the Head of the English Department, Prof. Dr. Anis Haddad; Lect. Dr. Rukhsar Nadhm; Lect. Dr. Olga Babenko, Asst. Lect. Marwa Basheer; and Asst. Lect. Mirna Shikwana on December 10th, 2025, at CUE.
The workshop offered the audience a two-part theoretical and practical exploration of the interrelation of arts (literature, paining, and music) and the brain activity. After listening to the theoretical presentations on the role of arts in mental health, well-being and cognitive processes, CUE staff and selected students were engaged in reflective stream-of-consciousness writing and on-site painting, inspired by listening to the poetic text accompanied by the related classical music.

The Head of the English Department, Prof. Dr. Anis Haddad, mentioned throughout his speech, “We live in a time when our daily work is often dominated by routines, deadlines, and problem-solving. Yet, research in neuroscience shows us something fascinating: when we engage with art—whether by reading literature, creating or appreciating paintings, or listening to music—we activate different regions of the brain and strengthen new neural pathways. These experiences do not only enrich our imagination and creativity, but they also enhance memory, empathy, and even problem-solving skills.”

The session was designed to help the audience explore these connections. The session will reflect on how literature sharpens our capacity for critical and emotional understanding, how painting stimulates visual thinking and innovation, and how music harmonizes both hemispheres of the brain to improve focus and well-being.

This workshop is not only about art for its own sake; it is about how art can become a tool for personal growth, professional development, and collective inspiration. By the end of our time together, I hope we will see that engaging with art is not a luxury but a necessity for expanding our minds and building healthier, more creative communities within the university and beyond.

At the end, the President of the university, Prof. Dr. Nazar P. Shabila, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Iqbal Gogris awarded the presenters with the appreciation letters.
