CUE Hosts Workshop on ECTS Credits and Academic Workload Calculation

CUE conducted a workshop for faculty members titled “Understanding ECTS Structure, Classification, and Credit Calculation” which was presented by Asst.Prof. Gerard Slattery and Asst.Prof. Manoj Sangisetti on February 15th, 2026.

This workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) within the broader context of the Bologna Process. The session focuses on understanding the structure, classification, and calculation of ECTS credits, emphasizing student workload measurement and alignment with learning outcomes. The workshop explores the conceptual foundation of ECTS as a student-centered credit system and explains its role in ensuring transparency, comparability, and academic recognition across higher education institutions. Participants examined structured and unstructured workload components, credit allocation principles, degree cycle requirements, and variations in credit-hour standards across countries.

Delivered through an interactive workshop approach, the session combined conceptual explanations with step-by-step workload calculation demonstrations and practical module-based exercises. Participants actively engaged in individual and group activities that required them to configure ECTS components and apply formulas to calculate Student Workload (SWL), Structured Student Workload (SSWL), and Unstructured Student Workload (USSWL). Through guided discussions, faculty members also examined common calculation errors and explored best practices to ensure accuracy and compliance with accreditation and quality assurance standards.

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants were equipped to clearly explain the connection between the Bologna Process and ECTS, apply student-centered learning principles to workload calculations, accurately compute ECTS credits using institutional standards, differentiate between structured and unstructured workload components in module design, and identify potential credit allocation errors.

The workshop reflects CUE’s continued commitment to strengthening academic quality, enhancing curriculum design practices, and aligning institutional standards with internationally recognized higher education frameworks.
