CUE Secures Second Place in the Kurdistan Universities Rapid Chess Championship 2025
Erbil, Kurdistan Region — The Catholic University in Erbil (CUE) proudly achieved second place in the Kurdistan Universities Chess Championship – Rapid 2025, an inter-university competition organized by Hawler Medical University (HMU) for the second consecutive year.

CUE’s chess team represented the university with distinction at the Kurdistan Universities Championship – Rapid 2025
The tournament, supported by Prof. Hawre Mustafa Bakr, President of HMU, and coordinated by Dr. Dlzar Hama Salih, Chief of Khanzad Chess Club, brought together 37 players from eight universities across the Kurdistan Region.
Following the Swiss system over five rounds with a 10+10 minute rapid format, participants showcased strategy, composure, and skill in one of the region’s most competitive university chess events.
Representing CUE were Dr. Amer Nafea, Mr. Namir Jibrail, Mr. Hardi Wahab, and Mr. Ojeen Slewa — a strong team that collectively scored 8 points across the five rounds, finishing just behind Salahaddin University, which also ended with 8 points, securing the championship title.
“This result reflects the commitment and strategic mindset of our faculty members and staff, and demonstrates the value of intellectual engagement beyond the classroom,” a CUE representative said.

The event not only highlighted the region’s growing interest in academic sports but also underscored CUE’s dedication to fostering critical thinking, concentration, and community spirit through diverse extracurricular activities.
“Chess encourages analytical reasoning and patience — qualities that enrich academic and professional excellence,” the representative added.
CUE extends heartfelt congratulations to its team members for their outstanding performance and sportsmanship, and to Hawler Medical University for its continued leadership in organizing such initiatives that bring together the Kurdistan academic community.
