Q- Methodology: A novel research method to study people’s subjectivity and opinions.

On November 21, 2022, Prof. Dr. Nazar Shabila, CUE President and Vice-Chancellor, presented a seminar entitled “Q-Methodology: A novel research method to study people’s subjectivity and opinions”. Throughout the seminar, Dr. Nazar explained the meaning of Q Methodology, why it is used and what it is used for. Furthermore, he explained that this methodology is a foundation for the systematic study of subjectivity, it is used to identify and describe shared viewpoints on certain topics, and is useful to understand subjective views. For example, the application of the Q Methodology requires the participation of a number of people, who are willing to express their points of view regarding a certain issue, which later are studied to make a conclusion. Moreover, Dr. Nazar presented examples of Q Methodology research. He also outlined the steps for the Q Methodology application, which are: Having a P set (participants), Q set (statements), Q sort (subjective grid of data collection) Q analysis (concluded using software programs), and interpretation of results.

Some limitations of this methodology, such as time and effort consumption during the process, as well as its hardship for poorly educated participants and new to academics, were also highlighted.

Dr. Nazar also encouraged academic staff to learn more about this methodology and to adapt it for future research. The seminar concluded with an example of a research paper that applied this method.
