Personal Statement Guide

Write with truth, purpose, and direction. We are not looking for “perfect English.” We are looking for a real student voice: clear, honest, and responsible.

Requirements

  • Length: 250–400 words (about 1 page maximum).
  • Use short sentences. Avoid big words you do not normally use.

How to use this guide

  • Follow the structure below (5 short paragraphs).
  • Write in your own words—no copied text.
  • Be specific: real details, real plans.

Simple structure

Paragraph 1 — Who you are (2–3 sentences)

  • Include: name, city/village, background, what shaped you.
  • Starter: “I am [Name], from [City/Village]. I finished [School/Year]. I grew up in [brief context], which taught me [value/lesson].”

Paragraph 2 — Why you chose your major (3–5 sentences)

  • Include: major, why it matters, what you’ve done to prepare (if any).
  • Starter: “I am applying to study [Major] because [reason]. I became interested in this field when [experience]. I believe this major will help me develop skills in [skills].”

Paragraph 3 — Your challenges and resilience (3–5 sentences)

  • Include: one challenge (only what you are comfortable sharing), what you did, what you learned.
  • Starter: “One challenge I have faced is [challenge]. I managed this by [actions]. This experience taught me [lesson].”

Paragraph 4 — Why you deserve the scholarship (3–5 sentences)

  • Include: what support would change for you, your commitment to attendance/effort/conduct, how you’ll stay in good standing.
  • Starter: “This scholarship would help me by [specific impact]. In return, I commit to strong attendance, serious study, and respectful conduct. I will also participate in university activities and meet all scholarship requirements.”

Paragraph 5 — Your plan after graduation (3–5 sentences)

  • Include: career plan, how you’ll support family/community/Iraq.
  • Starter: “After graduation, I plan to [plan]. My goal is to contribute by [service/community impact]. I want to be a graduate who is [qualities].”

What to avoid

  • Copying from the internet or using AI-style language
  • General phrases like “I love helping people” without examples
  • Attacking others, political statements, or exaggerated claims
  • Promises you cannot realistically keep

Before you submit (checklist)

  • 250–400 words
  • Simple English, short sentences
  • Matches your documents and interview answers
  • Clear major + clear plan
  • Honest challenges (if you choose to mention them)

“Thank you for considering my application. I will honor this scholarship through serious effort and responsible conduct.”
